The Bengals’ coach, Sam Wyche, having undergone a heart transplant in 2016, is still with us. He was a frank guy. He could have been asked about, too. And to think what coaches, players and media today lament as “distractions.”
And maybe NBC could have even found Wilson, now 56. It’s unlikely he’s anywhere far from where he was last sentenced. Regardless, he should be attached to an official paper trail.
And here’s where it gets really interesting. The original ruling was a touchback and no extra time added. After Bears coach John Fox lobbied for a safety, referee Clete Blakeman consulted with Alberto Riveron, the NFL’s senior vice president of officiating, in New York, and it was correctly determined the Bears would get the ball at the spot of the fumble plus half the distance to the goal for the Steelers’ penalty.
After a false-start penalty, the Bears settled for a 24-yard Connor Barth field goal for a 17-7 Bears lead at the half.
As it turned out, the Bears could have used the additional points, needing overtime to put the Steelers away. Howard became the hero in a football sense on a day when more than a hundred stood up against a president and for their beliefs, and Alejandro Villanueva stood alone.
“It’s our time of the year,” Seahawks general manager John Schneider said in his pregame radio interview with 710 ESPN Seattle last week.
“I do think it has a lot to do with how you prepare your guys to finish and getting them ready to do it, and with a real discipline and mentality,” coach Pete Carroll told reporters last week.
A fairer approximation of Cousins’ trade value could be the first-round pick (15th overall) and two third-round picks in the 2008 draft that the Chiefs received from the Vikings for defensive end Jared Allen after he had been given a franchise tag. A swap of 2008 sixth-round picks was also a part of the trade. Above-average starting quarterbacks are generally more valuable than pass rushers, even elite ones. Although an argument can be made that there isn’t any price too steep for a franchise quarterback, the 49ers parting with the second overall pick in the upcoming draft probably wouldn’t be on the table if there were serious trade discussions.
But critics such as O’Leary don’t buy it.
