Teddy Bridgewater’s not practicing yet, but he’s close to rejoining the Vikings

Limited Mens Isaiah Canaan Jersey Teddy Bridgewater’s road to recovery from a devastating knee injury that cost him the entire 2016 season reached another milestone Tuesday when the Minnesota Vikings quarterback hit the practice field with his teammates during the team’s first Organized Team Activity (OTA) of the offseason.

It wasn’t quite a practice for Bridgewater, who still hasn’t been cleared by a doctor. But he was back on the field dropping back and throwing as part of his rehab — albeit with a bulky brace on his left leg.

While Bridgewater was not at the practice session Wednesday due to a scheduled doctor appointment, Vikings general manager Rick Spielman told reporters that the team released video of the quarterback Tuesday to dispel concerns about the recovery.

Bridgewater went down in a training camp practice in August of 2016, suffering a torn ACL and dislocated knee. Shortly thereafter, the Vikings traded a first-round pick to acquire Sam Bradford, who led the team to an 8-8 record.

Both Bridgewater and Bradford have contracts set to expire following the 2017 season after the Vikings opted not to pick up the fifth-year option on Bridgewater’s deal.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer wasn’t at practice to talk about Bridgewater as Zimmer is recovering from his eighth eye surgery. But he did speak optimistically about the quarterback in March — one day after Bridgewater posted video of himself throwing on a practice field.

Bridgewater was a first-round pick in 2014 and threw 28 touchdowns with 21 interceptions in two seasons as the team’s starter before going down with an injury. Now he’s getting closer than ever to rejoining the Vikings in practice.

White Sox’s Jose Abreu ate part of his fake passport en route to U.S., he testifies

White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu, fearing he would lose out on a $68 million contract, ate part of the fake passport he used in 2013 to fly to the U.S. as part of an alleged operation to smuggle Cuban baseball players, he testified Wednesday in federal court in Miami.

Limited Womens Francisco Lindor Jersey The negotiations between Cousins and Washington will be interesting because the quarterback actually holds most of the leverage. Here’s ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio with an explanation as to how things can go:

There’s a way for Cousins to force Washington to be reasonable as to its expectations. If Cousins, who has yet to sign his $23.94 million franchise tender, were to declare that he won’t be signing it until the week preceding the regular-season opener, Washington would have to decide whether to take whatever San Francisco is offering to get the deal done now or to launch a multi-month game of chicken, with the team embarking on the offseason program and then training camp and then the preseason without Cousins and Cousins risking that the $23.94 million tender will be yanked at any time.

Authentic Kids Rondae Hollis-Jefferson Jersey The Redskins could rescind the tender to Cousins, but that would mean they get nothing in return for him and he’d likely bolt to San Francisco anyways. So it’s either the Redskins keep Cousins and risk paying him $23.94 million this season to do nothing, or they take their deal back and he leaves.

A trade would make the most sense for both sides since Cousins gets what he wants, and the Redskins get value for their quarterback. But for some reason Snyder doesn’t plan on making a deal, and the Redskins have embarrassed themselves yet again.

the NFL is gradually realizing no matter how much importance

Lately, the NFL is gradually realizing no matter how much importance — earned or not — gets hoisted on quarterbacks’ shoulders, and no matter how teams are willing to reach for them more every year, they can’t dismiss the importance of great running backs. They are better off taking advantage of a good one (and surrounding him accordingly) than swinging and missing badly on a quarterback, or leaving a good one with no backfield help.

Elliott and Bell are the obvious examples. So is the Falcons’ backfield duo of Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman, deserving of as much of the credit for their Super Bowl run as MVP Matt Ryan. They’re the most prominent of a wave of runners entering the league the last two years, like David Johnson, Derrick Henry, Melvin Gordon, Todd Gurley and Jay Ajayi.

Chris Kirksey Mens Jersey Now, in march Fournette, McCaffrey, Dalvin Cook, Alvin Kamara, D’Onta Foreman, Samaji Perine (and, yes, Joe Mixon, whose ability overshadowed his past transgressions in the NFL’s eyes). That doesn’t count the mid to lateround sleepers that always emerge. Foreman went in the fourth, Ajayi the fifth.

Just three years ago, the league had gone consecutive years without taking a back in the first round — but even then, footballwatchers knew what was coming. And remember, one of the more talented members expected to be in this class, Georgia’s Nick Chubb, was delayed by his knee injury and is expected to arrive in 2018.

MLB has a list of approved substances.

The Chargers, relocating to L.A. from San Diego, began accepting refundable deposits in January, announced ticket prices a month later. While existing season-ticket holders from San Diego were able to renew at StubHub later in February (good luck with that), season tickets went on sale to new customers March 9, Pro Football Talk reported, citing an unidentified team source.

So it took roughly two weeks to sell out, which sounds pretty good … until put in this context: In July 2016, the relocating Rams — the Chargers’ future landlords at a new stadium in Inglewood — sold 70,000 season tickets for L.A. Coliseum in six hours, the Los Angeles Times reported.

MLB has a list of approved substances. You should, in theory, know what’s OK to take. It wouldn’t seem wise to go off the list, no matter how innocent something seems. If nothing else, the list of players who claim to be surprised when they test positive for a banned substance should illustrate the the danger in this.

Will you warn other players about falling victim to lack of knowledge when it comes to this stuff?

I ask for forgiveness for unintentionally disrespecting so many people who have trusted in my work and have supported me so much, Marte said in his statement. Perhaps it would be good to let other players know what new things you’ve used this season so they can avoid them. This wouldn’t necessarily have to be done publicly, but it seems like you could spread the word quickly through MLB clubhouses.

That’s what it felt like that night when I didn’t have my gun

The NFL clearly puts an emphasis on being drafted in the top five, and falling one spot beyond can be dramatic. The difference between the fifth and sixth pick will be $3.1 million. The fall-off continues for picks seven and eight with a loss of $2.5 million for each drop.

While dropping from No. 1 to No. 4 would cost a player $3.25 million, the drop from No. 5 to No. 8 would cost the player a whopping $8.1 million. The drop from No. 8 to No. 9 is slightly more than $100,000, so there is virtually no difference between those picks.

The bottom line: If a player is in contention to be a top five pick, he better do everything he can to make sure he lands within the top five.

The other big first-round drop-off comes right outside the top 10, where a player will lose $1 million for the drop to No. 11 and another $1.5 million if he drops to No. 12.

After that, the salaries stabilize for the remainder of the round with minimal drops generally less than $200,000 per pick.

“But you know how when you leave your house, you have like a checklist? You check your pockets like, ‘Phone, wallet, keys … O.K., I’m good.’ And if you leave your wallet or your phone at home, you feel kind of naked because you’re so used to having it on you. It’s a part of you.

“That’s what it felt like that night when I didn’t have my gun. I usually had it on me. So that night, before we picked up my teammate and went into the city, I decided to go home and get my gun.

“Looking back, I realize that carrying a gun gave me a false sense of security. I thought I was protecting myself when, as it turned out, I was doing the opposite.

“When we got to the club, I got patted down at the door, and the security guard lifted my shirt up and saw my gun tucked into my belt. He was like, ‘O.K., if you’re gonna carry a gun, we gotta be with you the whole night.’

A hitter’s natural reaction is to lean back

Why: Morris, who had 254 wins, pitched a 10-inning shutout in Game 7 of the 1991 World Series and topped out at 67.7 percent of the BBWAA vote in 2013, doesn’t need too many people to make his case at this point. He might have the best chances of anyone on the committee’s ballot this fall. He’s an underwhelming candidate by sabermetrics, but that seems unlikely to work too much against him with the committee.

Limited Mens William Jackson Jersey Barnes threw a 90-mph fastball that was headed inches behind Machado’s head. A hitter’s natural reaction is to lean back, away from a pitch.

Somehow, Machado managed to lean forward; if he’d leaned back, we wouldn’t be talking about a close miss. We would probably be wondering whether one of baseball’s brightest stars would be OK after suffering a concussion or worse. Watch it again.

There’s not much to nick at The MIck being in this sweet spot in the order. Three MVPs, seven World Series titles and 20 All-Star game appearances will do that. He was a fixture in the ’50s, ’60s the way Jeter was in the ’90s, aughts and ’10s.

The Yankee Clipper would be ahead of Mantle if not for the latter’s longevity. DiMaggio did dominate along with rival Ted Williams in their seasons not lost to serving in World War II. In terms of always lovable celebrity status (sorry, A-Rod), nobody has been better since than Jeter.

In the desert, the Diamondbacks lineup has been spectacular, too — all eight regulars with at least 60 plate appearances have an OPS of at least .800 — and former ace Patrick Corbin looks like he’s back to his All-Star form after a couple of injury-plagued seasons. The rotation behind Corbin and Zack Greinke has been solid, but the pitching isn’t all peachy; Shelby Miller just learned he’ll need Tommy John surgery, and for-now closer Fernando Rodney has a 12.60 ERA.

Texans say they didn’t ignore Jay Cutler’s phone calls

The Texans have denied that they were side-stepping calls from Jay Cutler as the former Bears quarterback looked for a new NFL gig elsewhere.

Houston general manager Rick Smith called the claim “inaccurate” and said he has too much respect for Cutler’s agent, Bus Cook, to ignore his calls.

“When you bring a new coach in, you go through a rebuilding process,” Johnson said in a 2014 interview with the Houston Chronicle. “Some people say it’s not. Some people say it’s a quick fix. Everybody has their own opinion. But I’ve been through the situation more than once.”

A lot of his frustration had to do with the lack of help he got as a player and the team’s repeated insistence on bringing in offensive players in the draft that didn’t pan out. In addition to never drafting a quarterback in the first round with Rick Smith as the team’s general manager.

But after leaving the Texans in 2014, Johnson signed a one-day contract to retire with the Texans a few weeks ago. Back in the fold again, no one was more excited than Johnson to see Smith trade up to grab Deshaun Watson with the No. 12 pick.

Ogden has earned his current success, VanPelt said, pointing out that in his experience, NFL players “are an incredibly resilient population.”

“They may get knocked down, but they rarely stay down,” he said, “and Marques definitely has that trait.”

A bankruptcy four years ago, derailing a happy post-football life? “It’s part of the story,” Ogden said. “But it’s not the whole story.”nike_steelers_2113

Packers release RB Christine Michael

Artem Anisimov Mens Jersey The Green Bay Packers have released running back Christine Michael, the team announced Monday.

Michael joined the Packers last November after he was released by the Seahawks. He had rushed for 469 yards and six touchdowns on 117 carries in nine games for Seattle before his release.

It was assumed Michael would take up a starting role for the Packers last season considering Eddie Lacy and James Starks were both out long-term with injuries. However, wide receiver Ty Montgomery converted back to running back — a position he played in college — and ran away with the job.

We’re in the early stages,” Quinn said Wednesday. It’s really too early to kind of give any update but we’re going through the process. These things don’t happen overnight.

Stafford is set to earn a base salary of $16.5 million in 2017, the final season of a five-year, $76.5 million contract he signed in 2013.

Stafford was enjoying an outstanding 2016 campaign before his play was affected by a late-season finger injury on his throwing hand. Stafford still helped guide Detroit (9-7) to a wild-card appearance, finishing the year with 4,327 passing yards and 24 touchdowns to 10 interceptions.

Stafford, the first player selected in the 2009 draft before a rookie salary cap was installed, has earned $110.8 million during his career.

The Twins sure are in first place.

Justin Williams Jersey
Cornerback Desmond King could wind up being 2017’s biggest steal after being drafted in the fifth round. All in all, this looks like a haul.

Ziggy Hood Jersey The Twins sure are in first place. And [looks at calendar] it sure is May 4. Maybe that doesn’t seem weird to you! Given the Twins lost 103 games in 2016, though, and then did very little this winter besides fail to trade their best player — no, really, our Key Additionsection in their team preview was for their new general manager — it should shock you. Minnesota won on Wednesday, giving them a 14-11 record that puts them percentage points ahead of the Cleveland Indians in the AL Central.

It helps that they’re not necessarily there because of great luck or an absurd record in one-run games or anything like that. The Twins have managed to put up the fifth-best OPS+ in the majors to this point, powered by Miguel Sano, Max Kepler, Brian Dozier, and Robbie Grossman, and in spite of a horrible start by Joe Mauer. Their pitching has been top-heavy, and Ervin Santana isn’t going to look like he’s trying to fit a Hall of Fame career into a single season forever, but the staff has been above-average overall, too.

Will they keep on winning? It’s hard to say! They were supposed to be a decent team in 2016 before literally everything went wrong, and this year a whole lot is going right even with Mauer struggling and Byron Buxton looking like he’s never seen a baseball before. They’ll likely need some rotation help and another bat to either pick things up or be brought in, but there’s no reason the Twins are worse pick to try to challenge the Indians than anyone else in the Central. At least, not while the good parts of the team continue to put 2016 behind them.

The Wizards proved in Game 5 they are just fine

This is the most promising Wizards season in, well … for the sake of Wizards fans, we don’t have to count. What we do know is they haven’t been to a conference finals since 1979. They hadn’t won their division since that season, either, and that finally happened this year. Maybe the conference finals come next.

That’s easy to say for me as an outsider. For a Wizards fan — a fan of any D.C. sports team, if you want to expand the perspective — they’re just waiting for something bad to happen. Can you blame them? Over the past 38 years (sorry) only bad things have happened.
Trent Brown Elite Jersey
The Wizards, who won twice in Washington only to return from Atlanta with the series tied, performed fine in Game 5. They fell behind early but surged back to take a halftime lead. They won the third quarter by three points, and they were looking fine in the fourth quarter until a mini-run from Dennis Schroder (six points and an assist in two minutes) cut Washington’s lead to just two. All of the Wizards’ sports failings came rushing back right then. This is always how it happens, more or less.

Worse, the Bears probably didn’t need to trade up to get Trubisky at all. He would have been there waiting for them with the third overall pick on Thursday night.

The MMQB’s Peter King was in San Francisco’s war room and witnessed the Niners’ end of that transaction.

Prior to the draft, the Niners had floated the possibility of selecting Trubisky second overall. We said at the time it looked like a smokescreen, and that’s exactly what it turned out to be.

Jonathan Freeny Elite Jersey The top three players on the Niners’ draft board were Myles Garrett, who the Browns ended up taking with the first overall pick, Solomon Thomas, and Reuben Foster. 49ers general manager John Lynch knew early Thursday that the Browns were most likely going to take Garrett with the first pick.
